Africa's largest protected wildlife area, and one of the only places in Tanzania to safari by boat.
Formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve, the northern section was redesignated Nyerere National Park in 2019, named after Tanzania's first president. It remains one of the largest protected wildlife areas on the continent, centered on the Rufiji River, whose waterways make it one of the few Tanzanian parks where boat safaris are a genuine part of the experience.
What makes Nyerere different: the combination of boat safaris, walking safaris, and traditional game drives, all in one park, offers more variety of activity than almost anywhere else in Tanzania.
June through October, the dry season, offers the best game viewing as wildlife concentrates near the Rufiji River. The wet season (November-May) sees some camps close, particularly during the heaviest rains in April.
Nyerere is reachable by a scenic domestic flight from Dar es Salaam (around 45 minutes) or a longer road transfer. Given its size and the flight convenience, most visitors fly in.
