Ruaha is Tanzania's largest national park, part of a vast protected ecosystem in the country's south. It sees a fraction of the visitors of the northern circuit parks, meaning sightings often happen without another vehicle in view. The Great Ruaha River is the park's lifeline, drawing dense wildlife concentrations along its banks, especially in the dry season.
Why Ruaha appeals to repeat safari travelers: if you've already done the Serengeti and Ngorongoro and want a wilder, quieter experience with excellent predator sightings, Ruaha is often the top recommendation.
June through October, the dry season, offers the best wildlife viewing as animals concentrate along the Great Ruaha River. The wet season (November-May) brings lush scenery and excellent birdwatching, with some camps closing during the heaviest rains.
Most visitors fly into Ruaha from Dar es Salaam or other southern circuit parks, since road access is long and remote. Flying is strongly recommended given the distances involved.
