Best Time to Visit Egypt: A Season-by-Season Guide

Cairo, the Nile, and the Red Sea coast don't run on quite the same calendar, here's how to time each.

Egypt's inland heat can be genuinely extreme for several months a year, while the Red Sea coast stays comfortable on a different schedule entirely. Here's how to plan around both.

The Short Answer

November through February is peak season and the most comfortable window for sightseeing in Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan, book Nile cruises 4-6 months ahead if traveling then. March is often considered the sweet spot, warm and sunny with slightly thinner crowds than peak winter.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

MonthsWhat to Expect
Nov–FebPeak season, comfortable daytime temperatures for sightseeing, book Nile cruises well ahead, expect crowds at major sites
MarOften the sweet spot, warm and sunny before the summer heat, slightly thinner crowds than peak winter
Mar–early MayOccasional Khamsin sandstorms possible inland, usually a single bad day rather than a trip-disrupting event
Jun–AugBest avoided inland, Luxor and Aswan regularly hit 40-45°C, even locals find it tough
May & SepWorkable for heat-tolerant travelers, prices often drop 30-40% and sites are noticeably quieter
OctConditions improve again, comfortable temperatures return for the Nile route

The Red Sea coast runs opposite: Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada, and Marsa Alam stay pleasant for beach time April through October, with sea breezes keeping even summer bearable, unlike the inland cities.

Best Time for a Nile Cruise Specifically

October through April is widely considered the best window for a Luxor-Aswan Nile cruise, cool enough to comfortably explore temples and tombs, many of which involve walking through enclosed, non-air-conditioned spaces. Summer cruises exist but are far less popular given the extreme inland heat.

Combining Cairo, the Nile, and the Coast

If your itinerary includes all three, aim for November-March for the Cairo and Nile portions, then extend into April if adding Red Sea beach time, giving you comfortable conditions throughout the entire trip.
