About the Serengeti

The Serengeti is Tanzania's most famous national park, and for good reason. Its endless plains stretch to the horizon, home to over a million wildebeest, hundreds of thousands of zebra, and healthy populations of lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo. It's also the stage for the Great Migration, the continuous, year-round movement of herds across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.

• The Great Migration, with river crossings typically peaking July through October
• Dense predator activity, especially lion and cheetah on the open plains
• Hot air balloon safaris over the plains at sunrise
• Kopjes (granite outcrops) that serve as natural lookout points for wildlife and visitors alike

Best Time to Visit

June through October is peak dry season with excellent game viewing and migration activity in the north. January through March brings calving season to the southern plains, with newborn wildebeest and dense predator action, and noticeably fewer crowds than peak season.

Where to Stay

Options range from public campsites and mid-range tented camps to premium mobile camps that reposition with the herds throughout the season. Where you stay often depends on which part of the migration you want to witness, central Serengeti, the Western Corridor, or the north near the Mara River.
