Diani Beach & the Kenyan Coast: A Traveler's Guide

White sand, warm water, and a completely different pace, here's how to add Kenya's coast to a safari trip.

After days of early-morning game drives, Kenya's Indian Ocean coast is where most safari trips wind down. A short domestic flight from Nairobi or the Maasai Mara puts you on some of East Africa's most reliable beaches.

Diani Beach

Diani is Kenya's most developed and popular beach destination, a long stretch of white sand backed by coconut palms, with calm, reef-protected swimming conditions for most of the year. It has the widest range of resorts, restaurants, and activities on the coast, including kite surfing, diving, and day trips to nearby Wasini Island for dolphin watching.

Watamu

Quieter than Diani, Watamu is known for its marine national park, excellent snorkeling and diving among coral reefs, and a more relaxed, less commercial atmosphere. It's a good choice for travelers who want beach time without Diani's larger resort crowds.

Lamu Island

Lamu offers something different entirely, a UNESCO World Heritage Old Town with car-free streets, dhow sailing boats, and centuries of Swahili trading history. It's further off the beaten path and requires more travel time, but rewards visitors with a genuinely distinct cultural experience alongside the beach.

Best Time to Visit the Coast

June through October offers the driest, sunniest conditions, conveniently overlapping with safari high season inland. The long rains fall roughly April-May, and short rains around November, both quieter and cheaper if you don't mind occasional showers.

Pairing tip: most travelers do the safari portion of their trip first, then fly to the coast to unwind, rather than the reverse, arriving relaxed for early morning game drives is harder than the other way around.
