Sahara Desert Tours from Marrakech: Merzouga vs Zagora

Both promise a night under the stars, but the dunes, the drive, and the vibe are genuinely different.

Almost every Morocco itinerary includes a Sahara Desert tour, and almost every one of those tours heads to either Merzouga or Zagora. They're often marketed similarly, but the actual experience differs more than most people expect.

The Short Version

Merzouga gets you to Erg Chebbi, Morocco's tallest and most photogenic dunes, but it's a longer drive from Marrakech. Zagora is closer and quicker, but its dunes (Erg Chigaga aside) are smaller and less dramatic than Merzouga's.

Side by Side

MerzougaZagora
Drive from MarrakechRoughly 9-10 hours (usually split over 2 days)Roughly 6-7 hours (can be done in 1 long day)
Dune qualityErg Chebbi, tall, dramatic, classic "Sahara postcard" dunesSmaller dunes near town; Erg Chigaga further out has bigger dunes but requires an extra 4x4 transfer
Best forTravelers with 3+ days who want the most striking dune sceneryTravelers short on time who still want a genuine desert night
Typical tour length2-3 days from Marrakech2 days from Marrakech
Route sceneryCrosses the Atlas via Tizi n'Tichka, passes Aït Ben Haddou and Dades/Todra GorgesAlso crosses the Atlas, generally considered a slightly less varied route

Rule of thumb: if you have 3 or more days to dedicate to the desert loop, Merzouga's dunes are worth the extra drive time. If you're tight on time or doing Morocco as one stop on a longer multi-country trip, Zagora gets you a real desert night without eating up as much of your itinerary.

Booking Tips

Desert camps, especially in Merzouga, fill up quickly during peak months (October is particularly competitive for luxury camps), so book at least a few weeks ahead if traveling in spring or autumn. Confirm exactly what's included: camel trek, meals, and 4x4 transfers to more remote dune areas are sometimes quoted separately.
