Almost every Morocco itinerary includes a Sahara Desert tour, and almost every one of those tours heads to either Merzouga or Zagora. They're often marketed similarly, but the actual experience differs more than most people expect.
The Short Version
Merzouga gets you to Erg Chebbi, Morocco's tallest and most photogenic dunes, but it's a longer drive from Marrakech. Zagora is closer and quicker, but its dunes (Erg Chigaga aside) are smaller and less dramatic than Merzouga's.

Rule of thumb: if you have 3 or more days to dedicate to the desert loop, Merzouga's dunes are worth the extra drive time. If you're tight on time or doing Morocco as one stop on a longer multi-country trip, Zagora gets you a real desert night without eating up as much of your itinerary.
What to Expect on Either Tour
- A multi-hour drive across the High Atlas Mountains, with stops at scenic viewpoints and villages along the way
- A camel trek into the dunes timed for sunset
- An overnight stay at a desert camp, ranging from simple shared tents to luxury camps with private bathrooms
- A sunrise view over the dunes before the drive back
Booking Tips
Desert camps, especially in Merzouga, fill up quickly during peak months (October is particularly competitive for luxury camps), so book at least a few weeks ahead if traveling in spring or autumn. Confirm exactly what's included: camel trek, meals, and 4x4 transfers to more remote dune areas are sometimes quoted separately.
