Kruger is one of the few major African parks where self-drive genuinely works well, tarred and gravel roads are well maintained, and affordable government-run rest camps are open to independent travelers. That said, a guided safari with an experienced tracker meaningfully increases your odds of finding the Big Five and tends to include off-road access and night drives in the private reserves bordering the park (like Sabi Sands and Timbavati), neither of which is possible with a self-drive in Kruger itself.

A scenic coastal drive connecting small towns, indigenous forests, and beaches between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, popular as a self-drive road trip of anywhere from 3 to 10 days depending on how many stops you add.

Many nationalities can enter South Africa visa-free for short tourist stays, though requirements vary by passport, worth checking your specific country's rules directly with South African immigration before booking.
Best Time to Visit
May through September (dry winter) is the best window for Kruger, thinner vegetation and animals gathering at waterholes make sightings noticeably easier, though this is also peak season with higher demand. Cape Town is best visited November through March, its warm, dry summer, which unfortunately falls opposite Kruger's ideal window if you're trying to combine both perfectly.

Self-drive Kruger with rest camp accommodation can run notably cheaper than most African safaris, while guided stays in private reserves bordering the park sit closer to typical premium safari pricing.
